Canada loosens 'bloodline citizenship' restrictions, Americans begin tracing their ancestry

After Canada revised its Citizenship Act, an increasing number of Americans have begun tracing their family trees, hoping to apply for Canadian nationality through ancestral lineage. The new law, which came into effect in December 2025, removed the previous restriction that 'citizens born abroad are limited to the first generation.' As long as one can prove a blood relationship with Canadian ancestors, even if traced back several generations, it may be possible to apply for citizenship.

One such individual is Lutman, who lives in Massachusetts, USA. Her ancestors came from Quebec and Nova Scotia. She stated that, given the current uncertain political climate in the United States, she hopes to prepare a 'backup plan' for her family.

Immigration consultants have noted a significant increase in inquiries since the new policy was implemented. The Quebec National Archives also reported that genealogical research requests from the United States have surged from a few dozen to over a thousand. Experts believe that this trend of 'ancestral citizenship seeking' is likely to continue.
